Norwegian Wood, the playlist …

… after the book, the music.

So, so many musical references in Murakami’s Norwegian Wood that I couldn’t resist making a playlist to go with it.

I don’t pretend that this is an exhaustive list of the songs and music mentioned in the book, and the problem putting it together on Spotify is that there aren’t any original Beatles tracks on there!

Dammit … but not one to be defeated, I’ve included some darn good Beatles covers – fancy hearing Aretha Franklin singing Eleanor Rigby or The Fool on the Hill? Or Iggy Pop’s Michelle? Wilson Pickett’s Hey Jude? They’re all here!

Three different versions of Norwegian Wood, none of them really satisfy me actually, but for want of the original…

Of course, there’s more to this than the Beatles … there’s a couple of Bacharach tracks, some Stevie Wonder, The Doors, The Beach Boys and The Stones, a couple of classical pieces from Ravel and Debussy, and of course it wouldn’t be Murakami without a bit of jazz.

It’s a pretty ecletic mix, there are a few things in there I wouldn’t listen to normally but it’s a pretty enjoyable selection … for while you read, or anytime really!

Norwegian Wood, … après le livre, la playlist !

Le livre est tellement rempli de références musicales que je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher de créer cette playlist!

Seul hic … je voulais le faire par le biais de Spotify mais … pas une seule chanson originale des Beatles sur Spotify! Gah!

Enfin, je ne me laisse jamais abattre et j’ai donc sélectionnée quelques reprises des Beatles plutôt sympa … il y a Eleanor Rigby et The Fool on the Hill par Aretha Franklin, par exemple,  la Michelle d’Iggy Pop et le Hey Jude de Wilson Picket. 

Le seul bémol, et de taille quand même, j’ai beau y ajouter trois versions de Norwegian Wood, il n’y en a pas une qui me “satisfait” réellement … vaut mieux l’original, il faut avouer. 

Sinon, il n’y a pas que les Beatles … il y a Burt Bacharach,  Stevie Wonder, Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Beach Boys … un peu de classique avec Ravel et Debussy, et Murakami ne serait pas Murakami sans quelques références venus du monde du jazz.

Bref, un mélange plutôt éclectique, datant forcément du fin des 60s/début 70s pour la plupart, vu que c’est à cette époque que l’histoire de Norwegian Wood se déroule. Il y a des morceaux que je n’écouterais pas forcément tout le temps, mais c’est une sélection plutôt agréable, je trouve.
